Arroyo days

Digging in the sand

Racing toward the "mermaid rock"

The discovery of a "shark's tooth"

Carefully treading through the cholla forest

The local arroyo offers ample opportunities for discovery and play. Children's lives are enriched as they build a relationship with our desert; we cycle through the seasons, observe plant and animal behavior, climb, run, dig, build, and imagine, as we learn how to respectfully spend time in nature.

Arroyo visits are a normal part of time at Rootworks, outside of flash flood season. Children learn how to safely navigate desert space, assess risk, and build confidence.

Our curriculum is grounded in the Sonoran Desert, on Hia C-eḍ and Tohono O'Odham lands.

We learn about desert seasons, desert plants, desert animals, and desert place names. We observe the world around us, and begin to develop an understanding of the histories and cultures of this place.
