Early literacy

Early literacy is developed through a love of stories, the growth and development of communication skills, the act of reading together, and exposure to reading and writing as a cultural norm.

We focus on these fundamental building blocks, rather than memorization and recognition.

We also recognize that for bilingual students, language development should happen concurrently--a child's home language(s) must to be supported in the classroom and outside of it in order to grow.

Reading

We include a variety of high quality children's literature in the classroom, alongside ample time and space to explore these books. We carefully select books that reflect children's own lives, create windows into the lives of others, and engage interest.

Writing

Children are given the opportunity to make marks, consider symbols, and develop their fine motor skills. The development of muscles to grasp tools leads to the grasping a paint brush and then to a pencil. We work to encourage children's interest in communication.

Storytelling

Storytelling is a fundamental part of being human. We encourage the development of this skill through imaginary and dramatic play, puppet shows, opportunities for children and adults to share stories with the group, and traditional storytelling craft.
